[caption id="attachment_528" align="alignright" width="300"] The Casino Beach Challenge[/caption] Sunday morning saw the first small Baha Fly Fishing Challenge which was held at Casino Beach. We all met in the Suncoast parking lot in a light drizzle where we kitted up and tied on our favourite flies. Once everyone was ready we headed down to the beach and the challenge began. Thankfully the surf was a lot cleaner than expected after the heavy rains and snowfalls in the Drakensberg. The boys split into small groups and began fishing their way up and down the beach. Sadly only two fish came out that morning, a small wave garrick and a similarly small thornfish. Fishing between seasons is always tough but we were hoping to at least pick up a small shad. As…

It was a rather chilly late winter’s morning, nevertheless the car was packed with float tubes and rods and the journey began. We arrived at the water’s edge at around 7:30am and were instantly greeted by the polar bears (a mere 1 degree). I knew the conditions were going to be tough when the water we opted to fish was lower than I’d ever seen it and was only 6 degrees. The UHTFC (Underberg Himeville Trout Fishing Club) had been kind enough to invite me up to their waters for the weekend to see just what the club had to offer. It was an opportunity I certainly couldn't turn down. After a quick lunch Neill picked me and we started the journey to Underberg. I recently had the pleasure of travelling to the 8th continent, Madagascar, for my honeymoon. It went without question that my fly rods were the first items to be packed and I'm grateful to say that my wife didn't bat an eyelid. We flew into Antananarivo on a Tuesday with the temperature being a chilly 19 degrees when we landed. This left us a little concerned since neither of us had packed any warm clothes. Things then got off to a rocky start when our airport transfer didn't arrive and we were left to fend for ourselves in a foreign, non English speaking, country. Nick met me at Plantations at 5:30am and we were soon joined by Hans who had requested to fish with us at Pump Dam. Hans was kind enough to offer to drive so we climbed into his Fortuna and headed for the Drakensberg eager to catch some fish. Things however got off to a rocky start.
